A no-gap check-up and clean means the dentist accepts your health fund’s agreed fee as full payment for a defined set of preventive items, so you walk out with nothing to pay for those items. Here is what that actually covers, which funds Knoxfield patients ask about most, and where a gap can still appear.
What a No-Gap Check-Up and Clean Actually Covers
A standard preventive visit at a clinic like ours usually combines four things. First comes the examination: your dentist looks at every tooth, checks existing fillings and crowns, feels along the jaw and neck for lumps, and reviews your gums for bleeding, pocketing and recession. We also ask about sensitivity, grinding, diet and any medication that dries the mouth, because those change what we recommend next.
Second is the scale and clean. That is removal of soft plaque and hardened calculus from above and just below the gumline, usually with an ultrasonic scaler followed by hand instruments, then a polish with a gritty paste to lift surface stain from tea, coffee and red wine.
Third is fluoride application, normally a varnish or a foam tray placed after the clean. It rehardens enamel that has started to soften and is especially useful if you have exposed root surfaces or a history of decay.
Fourth is X-rays, but only where they are clinically indicated. Bitewing films are typically taken every two years for adults and more often for teenagers in their late teens, when wisdom teeth and newly erupted molars are being watched. A full OPG is also part of our no-gap offer.
Most funds bundle the exam, clean, fluoride and a limited set of X-rays into their no-gap arrangement. The item numbers you will see on the claim are the standard Australian Dental Association codes for those procedures, which is how the fund knows what it is paying for.
Funds that Knoxfield patients commonly ask about include Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, AHM, Australian Unity, GMHBA and Teachers Health. Participation varies between clinics and between individual policies, so ring reception and quote your fund and membership number before you book. We can tell you in a minute whether your card is on the list and whether any waiting period still applies.
What Sits Outside the No-Gap Items
Being straight with you matters more than a tidy headline. Several common treatments are quoted separately and are not part of a no-gap check and clean.
A deeper or more extensive clean is not part of the no-gap offer. Think of your regular dental check-up and clean like servicing your car: routine maintenance helps prevent bigger problems. If it has been a long time since your last professional clean, there may be heavier calculus build-up or gum disease that needs a deeper or more extensive clean rather than a routine one. That additional treatment takes more time and care, so it is not included in our No-Gap Check-Up & Clean offer. Your dentist will always explain this to you before going ahead with any additional treatment.
A filling, even a small one, is a separate item. So is a root canal, an extraction, a crown, a bridge, a denture, a night guard for grinding, or a mouthguard for footy and netball. Periodontal treatment beyond a routine clean, such as deep scaling under local anaesthetic, is also charged on its own because it takes longer and often needs several appointments.
Cosmetic work is never included. Whitening, veneers, composite bonding on front teeth and orthodontic aligners all attract their own fees, and most funds cap orthodontics under a separate lifetime limit rather than the general extras cap.
Emergency appointments outside normal hours, and any treatment needing a specialist referral, are quoted before we start. We give you a written estimate and, where relevant, a copy of the treatment plan you can send to your fund for a pre-approval quote.
Annual Limits, Waiting Periods and Claiming
Extras cover resets on your fund’s anniversary date, not on 1 January for everyone. If your limit is 700 dollars a year and you have already spent 600 on fillings, only 100 remains for preventive care until the reset. Check your balance through your fund’s app before you book, or ask us to check on the spot.
Waiting periods are the other thing people trip over. General dental usually has a two-month wait on a new extras policy. Major dental, which covers crowns, bridges and dentures, typically runs twelve months. If you switched funds recently, ask whether your previous service counts toward the new fund’s waiting period, because many funds recognise prior cover.
Most clinics claim on the spot through HICAPS, so you only pay any gap at the counter. If your fund is not on the terminal, we give you an itemised receipt to lodge yourself, and the fund reimburses you directly.
Children aged 0 to 17 may also be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, a government program separate from private extras. It covers a capped amount of basic dental over two calendar years and does not require private health insurance, though you do need to confirm your child’s eligibility with Medicare first.
Local Patients, Practical Timing
Knoxfield sits within easy reach of Wantirna, Rowville, Ferntree Gully, Boronia and Scoresby, and plenty of our patients work in the city and only think about a check-up when a tooth aches. Booking six-monthly in advance avoids that rush.
If you have not been seen for more than two years, expect the first visit to take longer. We may need to take X-rays you have not had in a while, and there may be more calculus to remove than a single clean can comfortably handle. Sometimes we split it into two appointments rather than rush.
Bring your health fund card, your Medicare card if you have children, and a list of any medications. If you are due for a check-up and want to know whether your fund qualifies for a no-gap dentist visit, call ahead with your membership details and we will confirm before you arrive.
A no-gap check-up and clean covers the exam, scale and clean, fluoride and X-rays, including a full OPG. A deeper or more extensive clean, fillings, crowns and cosmetic work are quoted separately.
